Last year added some instant classics to the Switch’s library like Super Smash, Octopath Traveler, and a handheld version of Diablo 3. 2019 is lining up to fill out the Switch’s library even more with tons of great game announcements already made by Nintendo. To celebrate the new year, we have compiled a list of 7 upcoming Switch games you don’t want to miss this year.
1. Animal Crossing Switch
Animal Crossing is a series with only 4 entries so far but has amassed a massive fan base. The series even released a phone spin-off that took the App Store by storm. Still, fans haven’t had a new addition to the main series since the 3DS title New Leaf in 2012. Animal Crossing was also absent from the Wii U’s library. Nintendo revealed in the announcement that the game was coming out this year and we should be ready for all new features using the Switches online capabilities.
Animal Crossing is a game series all about living your dream life. You arrive in a new town and get a loan on a small house. You work to pay off the loan while getting to know other villagers, catching fish, and collecting bugs. The town can be customized to your liking, and the house can be expanded upon. You can buy all types of furniture to decorate the inside of your home. The game also plays in real time with events happening based on real-world time.
2. Dragon Marked for Death
This game slipped under the radar for quite some time until game enthusiasts realized who was making it. The team behind some of the Megaman games returns to make an adventure similar to that of Megaman ZX that debuted on the Nintendo DS. The game is gorgeously drawn and has both platforming fans and Nintendo fans more than ready to get a hold of it.
The game will have you using weapons to make it through the different levels. The game features several different types of enemies to conquer with a familiar art style. You can also look forward to plenty of memorable boss fights.
3. Giga Wrecker Alt
Game Freak is a well-known design studio in the video game industry thanks to the fact they made the not so small Pokémon series. A little bit back the studio announced they were working on a game called Giga Wrecker Alt that has now been announced to be released in 2019. Much like Dragon Marked for Death, it is a 2D platformer, but with more of a focus on solving puzzles. Fans of the studio are hoping to see Game Freak go on to make more games outside of the Pokémon franchise if Gigs Wrecker Alt becomes extremely popular.
Giga Wrecker Alt will have a sci-fi story that encourages players to solve puzzles to progress the game. There will also be Metroidvania styled gameplay that is sure to please games who love older styled platformers.
4. Yoshi’s Crafted World
The Yoshi series is a charming world full of cute characters and pastel colors perfect for gamers of any age. The art style of the game is inspired by a storybook-like art style reminiscent of Yoshi Story for the Nintendo 64. Mario’s sidekick has recently gone into a more craft related look starting with the Wooly World games released for the Wii U and 3DS. Yoshi’s Crafted World is slated to release in March.
In Yoshi, you will have to eat enemies and solve puzzles to progress through the levels. The crated aspect adds in some interesting ways the world works creating an all-new game that stands out from the other Yoshi titles released before it.
5. Mortal Kombat 11
Mortal Kombat 11 is coming to Switch this year so that you can portably take on your friends. This marks the first time the series has had a title on Nintendo consoles in years. The bloody fighting game will retain its mature rating with no content being taken out for the release. DLC is also going to be available for purchase as it becomes available on other consoles. The classic fighter will bring tons of content from the previous game in the series along with plenty of new features.
6. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
In case you missed the game that Nintendo has been teasing since the Switch’s release we are happy to announce Fire Emblem is releasing this year. Like Animal Crossing, the Fire Emblem franchise didn’t show up on the Wii U and has stuck to handheld consoles for the last few years. In fact, the last title to come out on a home console was Radiant Dawn which released in 2007. Now we are finally returning to a home console with the 2019 release of Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
In the game, you will have to command your troops to take out the enemy forces. Fire Emblem is a heavy story game with strategic RPG elements known for not being for the light of heart. With stunning visuals, great music, and enthralling characters.
7. Luigi’s Mansion 3
Luigi’s Mansion is a series that began on Nintendo GameCube and won over a cult following. A sequel was eventually released for 3DS called Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon along with a remake of the original game for the system. A third title in the series is now on its way for the Switch this year. Nintendo has even hinted that the third installment in the series will be close to the first. This means portrait ghosts could be making a return to the series. This entree will take place in what looks to be a hotel opening up a whole new world of possibilities for the series.
The game will have gameplay similar to its predecessors. You will have to use your trusty vacuum that can suck up ghosts. Each floor of the mansion is played out like a huge puzzle that makes you interact with the environment to bring the ghosts out. You will have to explore haunted houses and make sure to collect all of the nasty spirits causing you trouble.
