In recent years, Apple has held an event on the second Tuesday or Wednesday of the month of September to announce the new iPhone. This year will not be different. Now the invitations have been sent to the media for an event at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, on September 12. “Gather Round” is the title given to the event.
But beyond the iPhone, what should Apple announce? With a company as secret as Apple, no one ever knows for sure. But the rumor mill has been bustling for months, and we have a pretty good idea of what to expect. Here is a brief outline of what you can expect next Wednesday from the event.
iPhone Xs and Xs Plus
Apple has not mentioned the iPhone in the event invitation. Nevertheless, everyone is sure that it will go – as in every September – for iPhones. A picture of the iPhone Xs and its Plus version came to light a few days ago. The smaller model will be the successor to the iPhone X; also there is a plus version with a screen size of 6.5 inches.
There will also be an intermediate size with 6.1″ screen size. Technically, the model is slimmed down a bit, with a simple camera (instead of the dual camera) and a screen LCD instead of OLED technology (see also our rumor check). At the IFA people were allowed to see cases for all three iPhones but did not let take pictures. The accessory manufacturers from the Apple-related production are not yet sure how the three new iPhones will be called.
iPhone SE 2
A successor to the iPhone SE. There is information that Apple is working on a device with iPhone 7 specifications. Whether it will be the iPhone SE 2 is very questionable. And if, then it does not come in September. There is at most a mini-update for the SE – presumably, Apple will save but completely.
Also, Apple will mention a few features of iOS 12 in the special event and announce the release date. Likely, it will be the Friday after the event (September 14th).
The next iPad Pro will be allowed to do without the home button like the iPhone X. The display of the 10.5 inch iPad will probably stretch to 11 inches screen size. And also the 12.9 inch iPad gets the new design and the performance. If the iPads do not appear in September, they could follow in October at the Mac event or even in the spring.
The update of the Apple TV is not known. If there is an update of the hardware, it will be minimal.
Apple Watch Series 4
It’s time for the fourth generation of Apple Watch, which we expect Apple to call “Series 4”. We hope the watch will come in two sizes, roughly the same as the current Apple Watches. It will likely have a new S4 system-on-chip with better performance and better battery life.
Persistent rumors have pointed to a larger screen in Series 4, made possible by reducing the frame. This will have a major impact on usability and represents the first significant change in appearance since Apple Watch was introduced.
watchOS 5 and tvOS 12
watchOS 5 automatically detects when starting workouts. And tvOS brings the Dolby Atmos support. As for iOS, Apple will announce the release date at the event and maybe show one or the other feature.
Macs and MacBooks
A lot of updates for Macs are coming later this year: iMac, MacBook Air, Mac mini, Preview on Mac Pro. But we assume that Apple organizes another event for this, namely in October.
macOS 10:14 Mojave
But with macOS Mojave, we may still be able to work sooner. Because even last year, Apple introduced the operating system at the end of September, before the new Macs.
AirPower announced in September 2017. The charging mat should be able to charge several devices wirelessly. It is still not available, and there were technical problems. Is that coming now?
AirPods Charging Case
The same applies to the AirPods case, which you can charge wirelessly. This was also announced a year ago but probably appears only after the upcoming Apple event.
Does the HomePod get an update? Well, in the rumor mill, the speaker currently plays almost no role – at most the cheaper option, which should appear under the Beats brand. Even if the invitation to the event looks a bit like a HomePod from the top – we do not have to hope for a HomePod with cable or Bluetooth connection.
