Grand Theft Auto V has already entered the history of video games to overcome the barrier of 90 million copies sold, but their achievements are not just in the gaming industry also in the entertainment production that has generated the most money, above any movie or record.
Most Financially Successful Media Title of All Time!
Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) has had an unparalleled run of success since its debut in 2013 on the PS3 and Xbox 360. A year later it hit the PS4 and Xbox One. This was followed by a PC launch. Thanks to its fantastic single-player campaign and a steady flow of content to its multiplayer mode. Keep in mind that it is sold less than Minecraft which has sold 144 million units, though it has raked in more revenue. This is due to it being a more expensive game and the micro-transaction-fuelled GTA Online mode.
Grand Theft Auto 5 reaches the milestone of the most successful entertainment product ever: more than any other movie, book, or game.
As you can see in the attached graphic, the game has generated more than 6 billion dollars with those that surpasses Avatar and its 2.8 billion and Star Wars and Gone With The Wind adjusting inflation they got 3 billion. Even taking into account DVD and streaming sales would not put the biggest movie blockbusters in GTA V’s neighborhood. The numbers of GTA V are crazy to even for the saga itself since its sales are the same as those of the sum of GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and GTA IV.
If we compare those 90 million sales on the other hand with another of the best selling franchises in history, we see how again GTA V is the real king of the market. Call of Duty Black Ops did not exceed 25 million, and Modern Warfare 3 stayed at 26.5, nothing to do with the Rockstar Games game. It’s beaten every movie, album, video game and concert ever made or produced.
At the moment, GTA developer Rockstar is working on Red Dead Redemption 2 that’s out on October 26, 2018.
