Review: ‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ Is Flawed and Fun as Hell | AIB
‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ is the sequel to Guillermo del Toro ‘s 2013 film, but this time, it is directed by Steven S. DeKnight. The director did not want to have the two main characters of the original such as Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba since he preferred a younger cast led by John Boyega (Star Wars Trilogy) and Scott Eastwood (Suicide Squad).
The story is set 10 years after the events of the first installment. As soon as you start, they give you a summary of what happened. They count as Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) sacrificed himself to save humanity. And how people have been rebuilding cities although the remains of the battles are still present. But the fight is not over yet, the planet is again besieged by the Kaiju, a race of colossal aliens, emerging from an interdimensional portal with the aim of destroying the human race.
The protagonist is Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) son of the great hero who survives searching among fallen robots the most valuable pieces. One day he has a run-in with a girl named Amara Namani (Cailee Spaeny), who turns out to be a great mechanic and has built her own Jaegers. Both are arrested and forced to enlist in the pilot program. For Jake, this is not new since he escaped training in the past.A new threat emerges, and the young pilots will have to save the world once more.
The film gives everything it promises since the battles are assured, the special effects are practically perfect, the destruction is guaranteed. It also does not last long, so you spend almost two hours flying. The story is more of the same, but they have tried to give a script spin to the threat. I’m not going to reveal it because there are few surprises in the movie, but if you are already told, this will spoil your viewing experience.
The actors are good, perhaps the most outstanding is John Boyega, especially above Scott Eastwood that although he has a lot of presence lacks the charisma of his father. Hopefully, you will gain experience and every time you do it better. There is a kind of love triangle with the character of Jules Reyes played by Adria Arjona, but it does not just describe well.
Let’s be fair, we have not come to see a love story, and we want to see fights between huge bugs and giant robots. And of that, there is double and even triple ration. The rest of the characters are very young, in fact, they are not pilots, but they are cadets. That’s why the film has a touch more adolescent than the first delivery, and now young people have to understand themselves to be able to fly the Jaegers.
If you like the first installment, action movies and special effects, you should go to this movie because you will have a good time. If everything I just mentioned is not to your liking, it seems to me that it is impossible for you to like it.
