Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse: How it affects your life? | AIB

Alcoholism and alcohol abuse can harm every aspect of your life. Prolonged intake of alcohol can cause serious health complications because it affects virtually every organ in the body, including the brain. Problems with alcohol also can damage your emotional stability, finances, your career and your ability to build and maintain satisfactory relations. Alcoholism and alcohol abuse can also have an adverse impact on your family, friends, and people at work.

Social negative consequences of alcohol abuse can be just as devastating as physical. Alcoholics and alcohol abusers are more likely to divorce, domestic violence problems, be unemployed and live in poverty. But even if you can succeed at work or keeping your marriage, you can not escape the effects of alcohol abuse and alcoholism has on their relationships. The dilemma of drinking will put enormous pressure on the people closest to you.

Often, family members and close friends feel obliged to cover the person with the problem of alcoholism. They pretend that everything is fine and hide all your fears and resentments can have a huge cost. Children are especially sensitive and can suffer lasting emotional trauma when a parent or caregiver is an alcoholic.

If you’re ready to realize you have a drinking problem, you have already taken the first step. Enormous strength and courage are needed to tackle alcohol abuse and alcoholism. Getting help is the second step, to recover from alcohol addiction is much easier when you have somebody around you who can support you, serve you comfort and guidance. Recovery depends on the treatment of mental health, learning healthy coping strategies and learn to make better decisions when problems arise in life.

Unlike alcoholics, alcohol abusers have some ability to set limits on drinking. However, alcohol consumption remains self-destructive and dangerous to themselves or others. Dealing with alcoholism of a loved one can be an emotional roller coaster. It is vital that you try to take care of yourself and get the support you need. It is also important to have people you can talk honestly and openly about what you’re going through in your life.
