India’s first Aadhaar-enabled Iris smartphone at Just 13,499

InFocus has announced that it will release India’s first Aadhaar-enabled Iris smartphone. The smartphone is priced at Rs 12,000, and will go on sale in the country early next year. InFocus plans to launch more smartphones supporting Aadhaar-integration in future.
The company says it has been awarded the Government of India’s STQC (Standardization Testing & Quality Certification) for its Aadhaar-Enabled Iris smartphone. This is for the first time a smartphone has been introduced with such feature. Earlier this year, Samsung launched its Galaxy Tab Iris featuring Iris-recognition technology at a price of Rs 13,499. But the Samsung Iris tablet was geared towards enterprises.
The Aadhaar-enabled devices will be linked to a user’s Aadhaar number and will use the biometrics to authenticate. The Iris image sensor embedded in the device will be authenticated against the biometric data in the UDAI key. InFocus says the biometric data from the InFocus device gets encrypted by a UIDAI key at the chip level in device, thus making it impossible for anyone to break in easily.
Coming to the device’s hardware and specifications, InFocus Aadhaar-enabled Iris smartphone features a 4.5-inch display coupled with a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory, microSD card support (up to 64GB) and a 2,300mAh battery life. It runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop out-of-the-box.
Unique Identification Authority of India (UDAI) has been working closely with smartphone manufacturers to push Aadhaar-enabled devices in India. Nearly 104 crore citizens in India have Aadhaar cards and around 40 crore of them own a smartphone. Once the devices with Aadhaar integration start coming to the market,  citizens of India can avail government schemes and subsidies.
